A full-day round trip from Fes to Morocco's famous Blue City, wandering the cobalt-washed alleys of Chefchaouen's medina before returning to Fes the same evening.
This premium 1-day private itinerary "Day Trip from Fes to Chefchaouen" starts directly in FES and takes you on a deep journey into the true magic of Morocco. Traveling in comfort with a private air-conditioned vehicle and your own dedicated, professional driver, you will discover stunning contrasts: from the bustling medieval medinas and ancient handcraft quarters to the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. The supreme highlight is a spectacular camel trek at sunset into the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara, followed by an unforgettable overnight stay in a high-end luxury nomadic camp. Complete with handpicked authentic Riads, guided local historical walks, and absolute flexibility, this tour represents the ultimate customizable Moroccan escape designed around your pace.
Today we will depart Fes early, ideally by 7:30-8am, for the roughly three-and-a-half-hour drive north into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, Morocco's famous Blue City. The route climbs gradually out of the Saïss plain surrounding Fes, passing through changing scenery as olive groves and open agricultural land give way to pine forest and terraced Berber villages the further north we travel. Founded in 1471 as a small defensive fortress, Chefchaouen later became a refuge for Muslim and Jewish families fleeing the Spanish Reconquista, which explains the town's distinctly Andalusian character and its famous blue-washed walls, a tradition whose exact origins remain debated among historians. On arrival, typically around midday, we begin exploring on foot with your guide, wandering through the upper medina past Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the 15th-century Kasbah fortress with its small museum and garden, before you have free time to get pleasantly lost in the labyrinth of blue stairways, doorways, and flower-filled corners that make the town so beloved by photographers from around the world. Lunch (independently, at one of the many small local restaurants in the medina) is a good opportunity to try local specialities, and many guests use the afternoon to browse handwoven wool garments, textiles, and the region's distinctive soft goat's cheese. In the mid-to-late afternoon, typically around 4-4:30pm, we begin the drive back to Fes, retracing the scenic route through the Rif foothills, arriving in the early evening in time for dinner.
